First Light by Rebecca Stead will plunge you into two different new worlds and you'll not want to leave -- Greenland and Graceland. Greenland is where Peter, one of the narrators, moves with his father, a glaciologist, and his mother, a genetic scientist. The family takes off on an expedition where his father studies the effects of global warming on the glacier ice caps. Thea, the other narrator, lives in Gracehop, a world beneath the ice. Peter and Thea meet and their two different worlds start to collide as they begin to understand secrets hidden from them for generations. Stead describes the icy settings and glacial structures with vivid detail and color. After reading First Light, the reader will have a better understanding of the dangers of Global Warming: Steads research is convincing and troubling.

Her disappearance provides an eerie backdrop to protagonist Samara Taylor's personal drama: her mother's alcoholism, which prompted a four-week stint in rehab, and her father's refusal to focus on anything (his marital problems, the inappropriateness of his relationship with a 26-year-old church member, his parental responsibilities) other than his role as pastor to a flock in need. Sam's questions regarding God's existence (Do you just decide that you do believe, no matter what, and then force your mind shut when doubts try to come in?) and her place in the world feel all-encompassing, aptly mirroring the mood of her close-knit community as they trawl for answers in Jody's case. One Book One Glenbard reads Rules of Survival by Nancy Werlin October 27 - December 4. Join us for a Book discussion at the Library Monday, January 25 at 7:00P.m.

Living with an unpredictable, psychotic mother has taught Matthew how to survive. Constantly on alert, he and his sister, Callie, devotedly shelter their younger stepsister, Emmy, from their mother's abuse and worry about staying safe. Matt insists that "fear isn't actually a bad thing . . . . It warns you to pay attention, because you're in danger. It tells you to do something, to act, to save yourself," but his terror is palpable in this haunting, powerful portrayal of domestic dysfunction, which is written in retrospect as a letter from Matt to Emmy. Unfortunately, the adults in the children's life, a distant father and an apathetic aunt, don't help, though Matt sees a spark of hope in Murdoch, who dates his mother, Nikki, and then leaves when he becomes another target for her escalating rage. It is Murdoch, with a violent past of his own, who is willing to risk getting involved and eventually becomes the change agent that the children so desperately need. This is the story of what might happen when a soul is torn between choosing to live or choosing to surrender to death.

September Book of the Month, CODE ORANGE

Mitty is a high school boy and the main character of this thriller that takes place in New York City. Mitty’s biology class is doing a research paper on infectious disease and he is assigned smallpox. After procrastinating, he eventually starts the assignment but because he is stuck at his country home, he is limited to his mother’s collection of old books. Mitty discovers an envelope that contains 100 year old scabs from smallpox patients in an old medical textbook. He touches and sniffs the scabs.
Mitty realizes he could have contracted the disease from handling the smallpox scabs and spread it to all of New York City. To make matters worse, Mitty post his concerns on the World Wide Web where terrorist find him, then kidnap him with intentions of using him as a biological weapon. Is the virus still active? How can he prevent an epidemic?
Disturbing descriptions of the smallpox disease are discussed in Code Orange and the danger that still exist with infectious diseases and bioterrorism.

Children of War: Voices of Iraqi Refugees

This book is a collection of accounts and experiences that the children of Iraq have had with war, from the brutal rule of Saddam Hussein to the U.S. invasion. Most of the children are living as foreigners in other countries, such as Jordan and Canada. Some have opinions about Saddam and the U.S. and others do not, but all of them have graphic stories to contribute. This is an important insight to the lives of children who have the gravely unfortunate experience of growing up in a war-torn country and then being forced to live as refugees in different and unfamiliar places.

17-year-old Marcelo has an Asperger's-like syndrome and is comfortable at his special school, where he has a job caring for ponies in the stable. When his ambitious father encourages him to work in his law firm's mailroom, Marcelo is forced to navigate through the office politics as well as the outside world. Told in a characteristically flat tone, Marcelo is at once believable and somehow relatable. Sunrise Over Fallujah
by Walter Dean Myers

Instead of going off to college, like his parents had hoped, Robin joins the Army and heads off to Iraq. He is placed in a diverse Civil Affairs unit that includes many women as well as men. Robin writes letters home to his Uncle Richie, the main character of Myers' Fallen Angels set in Vietnam and starts to realize why his uncle was reluctant to talk about his experiences with war. While he initially signed up for the good of his country, he, like his uncle in Vietnam, increasingly become distanced from his original reasons and from understanding the innerworkings of war. As the book progresses, readers will be acquainted with the horror, violence and feelings of insecurity that couple with the experience of serving in Iraq, though the narrator tries to remain hopeful and dutiful. Readers will also gain insight into the experiences women serving in Iraq might encounter.

Tiger Moon, by Antonia Michaelis

Tiger Moon tells the story of young Farhad, who mounts a sacred white tiger intending to rescue the god Krishna's daughter from a demon king. Interwoven within the plot are other stories, one involving a young girl who has been married off to an older man and who fears that when he discovers she is not a virgin, he will kill her. Rich in Indian history and culture and adept at including the complicated and diverse religious environment of India (Hindu gods, Islamic mosques and the Bodhi tree are all called upon), Tiger Moon is a historical and cultural epic that will not soon be forgotten.

Bog Child by Siobahn Dowd

The notorious conflict in Ireland, a mysterious body found preserved in a bog, blackmail, what more could one ask for in a book? Set in the backdrop of the 1980s in Northern Ireland, this is the story of Fergus, a boy who finds the body of a young girl in a bog. As it turns out, her body is from a much earlier time and was the result of a mysterious murder. The girl (named Mel by Fergus) unfolds alongside Fergus' as he navigates the tumultous times, dealing with a brother in jail and being blackmailed into delivering packages containing bomb-making materials.

You can submit up to three of your reviews of books you loved... or just hated (keep it clean please!) Bring submissions to the Youth Services or Adult Services desks.

The winner will receive a gift certificate to Borders.

All reviews will be stuck on a wall somewhere in the library in honor of Teen Read Week October 13th - 18th.

The story then launches into a chronological build-up to the sisters' acts of resistence toward the ruthless dictator. The Illinois Library Association and Illinois Reading Enrichment and Development (iREAD) are sponsoring a Poster Contest to promote Teen Reading.

Theme: Scare Up a Good Book
Contestants: Open to all middle school and high school students
Rules: Each poster should:

illustrate the theme, Scare Up a Good Book
include images of books, a library, or something related to reading.
have all original art (no existing cartoons or comic characters please).
should be appropriate to hang in libraries
be UP TO 19 inches by 26 inches
have art that is computer-generated, or a painting, drawing or collage using traditional media

Winner: Will be the basis for the Young Adult iREAD Summer Reading Program in 2010. The statewide winner will be announced in October 2008 and will receive $1,000 in prize money.

Entry forms may be picked up at either the Youth Services reference desk or at the Adult Services reference desk.

All forms are due in the library on July 31, 2008 - and will then become property of the Illinois Library Association.

Book Buddies

Come to the library once a week to help a younger child out with reading! Availaible to middle school and high school students, the Book Buddies program pairs an older student with a younger child for the purposes of supporting reading efforts.

Book Buddies is currently in session, but we are always looking for more Buddies. In fact, the next round of orientation sessions is right around the corner. Get your forms in by June 13 and be sure to sign up for an orientation session on either Saturday, June 21 at 10 am, or Monday, June 23 at 7 pm.

You can read to your buddy each week, but also encourage them to read to you!

April 28 book discussion book chosen: Ballad of the whiskey robber : a true story of bank heists, ice hockey, Transylvanian pelt smuggling, moonlighting detectives, and broken hearts by Julian Rubinstein.
New teen room: The board likes the name "Teen Scene." The board plans to begin construction of magazine collage for one of the walls in the teen room in May. The board suggested a Guitar Hero Tournament for the Grand Opening of the Teen Scene.
Book drive for students in Uganda: The board will create signs and plan for bin locations at the next meeting, April 14.

GEPL High School Teen Advisory Board – Minutes 11/12/07 – 7:30 p.m.

Assigned monthly mini-displays – each member will display 5-6 books of their choice (based on a theme or favorites list) for a month in the YA area on the display shelf opposite the windows

· Everyone has a copy of the book discussion book, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, by Jonathan Safran Foer and Rachel checked out an extra copy for her friend. The discussion is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 3rd at 7:30 p.m. It has been agreed that book discussions will be scheduled every two months.
· Rachel wrote a review of Spud, byJohn Van de Ruit and Maisie wrote a review of The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
· The pizza and a movie night title is Ferris Bueller’s Day Off . The board members have agreed to distribute flyers for pizza and a movie night and have chosen where they want the pizza from and that bean bag chairs will the seating of choice.
· The board looked at several examples of other library’s teen homepages. The board would like to see links to authors’ blogs, links to their reviews and mini-display titles, links to entertainment news, library events, links to college information, a quick poll or survey – and of course a link to their TAB with their pictures and brief member profiles. They would like to name the page “Teen Scene” – which is also a possibility for a name for the YA area in the library.
· Finally, the board looked at examples of teen spaces in libraries and brainstormed for a new YA area. The board would like computers (four?), comfy chairs and cozy rugs, a disco ball, tables with board games set in them (namely Scrabble, Sorry, Checkers and Monopoly), some type of Ipod speakers and/or music, a space that appeals to both boys and girls, colorful décor, and the board is also interested in a soda machine, if possible. The board has also agreed that part of the wall space should be covered in a magazine collage that they have agreed to create.
· The board was informed that two sets of Guitar Hero have been borrowed and they expressed interest in a tournament, but we ran out of time before anything could be planned.
· Snacks for Finals Week were briefly discussed and Swedish Fish, granola bars, carrots and celery, and hummus and pita were at the top of the list.
· The meeting adjorned with a “field trip” down to the YA area so the members could see where their mini-displays will be located as well as where the new teen area will be.
